Is Economic Crisis an End-Time Indicator?

Christians are notorious for trying to link world events and political leaders to prophetic biblical scenarios. More than once, a president has been labeled the Antichrist and a natural catastrophe has been interpreted as a precursor to the Great Tribulation. As much as I resist the religious frenzy, the Scripture does command us to remain keen to “the signs of the times.”

For that reason, I’ve been particularly interested in the unfolding economic crisis. No doubt, many saw the Great Depression as the judgment of God, only to watch the country rebound. Nevertheless, for those interested in biblical prophecy, these are exciting (if not troubling) times.

This weekend, the G7 met in Washington; top finance ministers from around the world brainstorming about ways to fend off a complete economic meltdown. In an article entitled, Pressure builds for a global economic strategy, it’s described thus:

The way the current financial crisis spread around the world like a brush fire, outracing all efforts to contain it, underscored a painful reality: We have a global economy but nothing close to a global system for managing it. The world may be flat when it comes to the increasingly interconnected economies of the 21st century, but it still has borders — and conflicting national interests to go with them.

Now, as senior economic policymakers from the major developed nations meet here today, the question is whether the worst economic crisis since before World War II will open the door for a comprehensive, unified economic strategy. (emphasis mine)

This should send chills down the spine of every prophecy watchdog. Global economy? Global system for managing it? Unified economic strategy? For those “in the know,” many of these terms smack as codeword for a nefarious last days entity, the One World Government, and the Ahab that will helm that sinking ship, The Beast. Of course, this may or may not be connected. But who could doubt that the pieces are in place.

Jesus described a time when there will be “Great Tribulation such as the world has never known” (Mat. 24:15-21). According to Scripture, the end of our present age will be marked by national upheaval, cosmological catastrophes, plague, famine, and economic collapse. It is into this vacuum that a Leader arises, wooing the masses. The precursor to the unification of the nations and the rise of the Antichrist, is a volatile, unstable world. Global crisis is what pushes man toward one world governance. Of course, some speculate that these triggers — financial collapse, war, political intrigue — are deliberately engineered by secret societies and commissions bent on power. Either way, we are trending ever closer toward an unfolding prophetic scenario.

What role our current global economic crisis plays in all this is another story. Amidst the turmoil, Christians should be watchful, but not alarmist. Stock market crashes have come and gone. Antichrists have risen and fallen. However, given enough of them and we could wake up one morning to find ourselves knee-deep in the Apocalypse. So while I’m not one to jump on the over-crowded end-times bandwagon, I am growing increasingly convinced that the state of politics, technological advances, and globalization is pushing us closer and closer to the return of Jesus Christ.

I’ve always found Rev. 18 to have some chilling prophecy which may or may not be specifically about the US: “For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality.”

Would that revival comes as a result of the tornados, floods, hurricanes, economic collapse of the past year.

I’m convinced the only thing waylaying the Lord’s return (His choice, of course) is the prayer of the saints, not against “maranatha” but rather for those who have yet to come into the Kingdom.

I have wondered over the last 10yrs or so, how long this time of economic prosperity would continue. Many people have turned cold, they loved money and loved anything that was Godless. I am certainly starting to wonder, if GOD is making the proud humble and maybe he is allowing this to happen, to draw more people to himself through Christ. Either way, I can see that these are all stepping stones towards the end and yes, do believe from what I’m seeing and hearing, that the world is quickly leaning towards some sort of International monetary policy that will help govern our so called new world order.

TO ALL: We are in the last days. Jesus is coming back very soon and we need to be prepared. Save as many people as possible and prepare for battle. The world is collapsing as I am writing this. Things will be getting VERY VERY bad. Crashing world markets and economies, unemployment rates shooting to highs not ever imagined. wars and disease breaking out across the globe. PRAY and stay close to the WORD.
-May God strengthen us all through these times, and I look forward to shortly meeting all of you in the presence of our Lord and savior Jesus.

Yes, the economic meltdown is a likely indicator of end times but a far better indicator is the rise of the Police State. People are now monitored, investigated, and put on lists for daring to exercise free speech. There are over 2.4 million people locked up and many millions more under probation or on watch lists. We live in a classic police state just like described in the Book of Revelation.

Yep, that has happened to me, and it’s happening to a lot of other (innocent) people as well.

Mike, thanks for the thoughtful post. I have watched the events unfolding over the last few months with curiosity, dread, and a great deal of trepidation. I’m so glad that we know–whatever happens–that Christ WILL come and His perfect kingdom WILL be established.

Welcome to the High Calling network. I’m a fellow Wordserve author (Greg is my agent), and I’m also one of the welcome editors. We’re really glad to have you in the community!

Some say the end is near,
some say we’ll see Armageddon soon,
    I certainly hope we will,
    I sure could use a vacation…
